UMS Research Cluster for Sustainable Development



Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has established a comprehensive SDG Research Cluster Framework to accelerate high-impact, multidisciplinary research aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As a research-intensive university located in one of the world’s most biodiverse and culturally rich regions, UMS leverages its scientific strengths, indigenous knowledge systems, and living laboratories to advance sustainable solutions for local, regional, and global challenges. The UMS SDG Research Clusters bring together researchers from diverse fields—spanning marine science, engineering, social sciences, health, environment, economics, agriculture, forestry, and indigenous studies—under a unified mission: to produce knowledge that improves lives, protects the planet, and supports inclusive, resilient development. Each research cluster anchors its work in Sabah’s unique ecological, cultural, and socioeconomic landscape, ensuring that UMS’s research remains impactful, relevant, and grounded in real community needs.





Cluster SDG 1–3 — Human Well-Being, Poverty Eradication & Healthy Communities

Building strong, resilient, and equitable societies

This cluster focuses on poverty reduction, education equity, food security, mental health, health innovation, and community well-being. Research here supports community empowerment, public health interventions and policies for poverty alleviation.

Cluster SDG 4–6 — Quality Education, Water Security & Sustainable Living

Empowering Communities Through Education, Water Access and Environmental Health

This cluster advances sustainable education, digital learning inclusion, indigenous pedagogy, water resource management, WASH (water, sanitation, hygiene), and environmental quality.

This cluster focuses on renewable energy, nuclear science for environmental protection, smart-city systems, green engineering solutions, sustainable finance, and digital innovation for economic resilience.

This cluster focuses on renewable energy, nuclear science for environmental protection, smart-city systems, green engineering solutions, sustainable finance, and digital innovation for economic resilience.

UMS is globally recognised for its ecological and conservation research. Cluster 5 unites the university’s strongest scientific units in biodiversity, climate adaptation and ecosystem protection.
