Sustainable Operations at UMS

Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) integrates sustainability into every aspect of its campus operations to create a low-carbon, resource-efficient, and resilient university environment. Through the EcoCampus Framework, Sustainability & Climate Action Policy, and the UMS Strategic Plan 2023–2027, UMS ensures that day-to-day operations reflect global best practices in environmental stewardship and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UMS Sustainability, SDG & ESG Strategic Committee (JKSSE-UMS) serves as the central coordinating body driving Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s sustainability agenda. It oversees the planning, implementation, and monitoring of initiatives aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across the university’s operations, research, and community engagement.

• Functions and Roles of the Committee

1. To plan and implement the Campus Sustainability Strategic Plan in line with the SDGs and ESG principles.
2. To monitor and evaluate the implementation of campus sustainability initiatives.
3. To prepare annual reports related to the status and achievements of SDG and ESG implementation at UMS.
4. To encourage innovation and research in the field of sustainability.
5. To organize training programs and workshops related to SDG and ESG.
6. To plan and implement initiatives related to SDG, ESG, and sustainability.
7. To monitor the achievement of SDG and ESG programs.
8. To raise awareness among campus communities on the importance of SDG and ESG, provide data inputs for relevant certifications, and formulate recommendations and compliance policies.
9. To enhance compliance with ESG standards in university operations.

• Objectives of the Establishment of the UMS Sustainability, SDG & ESG Strategic Committee (JKSS)

UMS is responsible for ensuring the implementation of campus sustainability through four main categories:

1. Policy and Governance.
2. Research and Academic.
3. Campus Infrastructure and Operations.
4. Awareness and Community Engagement of UMS Members.
