The Kelab Mahasiswa Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) plays a significant and unique role in advancing sustainability by emphasising the often-overlooked social dimensions of sustainable development, particularly inclusivity, accessibility, and equal participation.

While the club's primary focus is to advocate for the rights, empowerment, and visibility of students with disabilities, its initiatives are closely aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).

  • 4. Enactus UMS

The Enactus UMS team is the student-led chapter of the global Enactus movement, focusing on social entrepreneurship and sustainable development within and beyond the campus. Their mission is to harness entrepreneurial action and innovation among students, creating projects that generate measurable social, economic and environmental impact.

This aligns strongly with UMS’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in themes like decent work & economic growth, responsible consumption & production, and climate action.

For its success and impact to the local communities, Enactus UMS was selected to represent Malaysia for the Enactus World Cup 2017 in London and scored the third place!

  • 5. UMS One Health Student Club (OHSC)

The UMS One Health Student Club (OHSC) is a multidisciplinary student organisation that emphasises the interconnectedness of human health, animal health and environmental health — encapsulated in their motto: “Unity, Morality, Sustainability”. The club aligns closely with UMS’s eco-campus and SDG commitments by engaging in environmental health, zoonosis awareness, and sustainable community outreach.

  1. i. Field Outreach & WASH Programmes: Conduct interactive water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) education and antimicrobial resistance awareness sessions for rural and school communities.

  2. ii. Interdisciplinary Workshops: Bringing together students from medicine, veterinary, environmental science and allied health to explore issues at the human-animal-ecosystem interface (zoonoses, microplastics, ecosystem health).

  3. iii. Awareness Campaigns on One Health: Running campaigns and seminars on key topics such as zoonotic diseases, environmental pollution, ecosystem disruption, and the broader One Health paradigm — especially in environmentally sensitive zones of Sabah.
  4. By doing so, OHSC contributes to SDGs including Good Health & Well-being, Life on Land, and Clean Water & Sanitation.

  • 6. Kelab Sukarelawan Siswa (KESUWA) UMS

Kelab Sukarelawan Siswa (KESUWA) UMS is a student volunteer club with the tagline “Sukarelawan Pemangkin Mahasiswa Unggul”. The group mobilises students to volunteer in environmental, social and community service initiatives.

Their work supports UMS’s broader values of community engagement, sustainability and service-learning.

Kelab Pemadam UMS is a proactive student-led organisation committed to promoting fire safety, environmental resilience, and community well-being within Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).
Beyond its core focus on fire prevention and emergency preparedness, the club contributes directly to sustainability and campus safety culture, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — particularly SDG 3 (Good Health & Well-Being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
The club’s initiatives foster a safer, more sustainable living and learning environment, supporting UMS’s long-term commitment to environmental stewardship and disaster-risk reduction.

Fire Safety Training & Campus Drills Students undergo practical fire-fighting and evacuation drills in collaboration with the Fire & Rescue Department (BOMBA) and the UMS Safety Unit.These activities raise awareness of resource-efficient fire response and reduce potential environmental damage from uncontrolled fires — supporting resilience and sustainable campus operations.

  2. ii. Sustainable Emergency Preparedness Workshops Workshops integrate disaster-risk reduction, energy-safe electrical practices, and waste-management awareness (e.g., safe chemical disposal, eco-friendly lab storage). This helps minimise hazardous emissions and aligns with UMS’s sustainability and occupational-safety policies.

  3. iii. Community Engagement & Awareness Campaigns: The club organises public education events in schools and local communities on fire prevention, home safety, and climate-related disaster awareness (e.g., drought-fire risk management). By doing so, Kelab Pemadam UMS acts as a bridge between UMS and society in promoting community resilience, environmental protection, and responsible risk management.
