Universiti Malaysia Sabah
Sustainability Competency Assessment
About the Assessment
The Sustainability Competency Assessment is part of Universiti Malaysia Sabah’s (UMS) effort to measure and enhance students’ sustainability literacy and values. It supports the EcoCampus Framework and Sustainability and Climate Action Policy (2023–2030) by assessing student competencies in sustainability knowledge, environmental ethics, community engagement, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) understanding. This assessment helps UMS track progress toward the university’s sustainability targets and ensures that all graduates are equipped with the competencies needed for a sustainable future.
Objectives of the Assessment
- To measure students’ sustainability literacy and awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
- To evaluate sustainability-related values, ethics, and behaviours among students.
- To identify strengths and gaps in sustainability education across faculties.
- To support continuous improvement of UMS sustainability curricula and experiential learning activities (SULAM, UMS-SPRINT, etc.).
Competency Dimensions
The assessment evaluates five key sustainability competencies:
- Systems Thinking – Understanding the interconnectedness of environmental, social, and economic systems.
- SDG Awareness – Familiarity with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and their relevance to daily life and study.
- Values & Ethics – Commitment to sustainability principles and responsible decision-making.
- Community Engagement – Participation in community-based sustainability projects (e.g., SULAM, SISWAPRIHATIN).
- Sustainable Practices – Application of sustainable habits and practices in campus and personal life.
